Devotional thoughts and tidbits shared on Facebook during 2017
(I hope at least a few hit home for you like they did with me and others)
God makes sure
Over a year ago, Myrna and I climbed a steep hill above Megiddo, a little city in Israel where according to the book of Revelation the last battle in this world will take place before Christ returns. As we climbed this hill, it was critical for us to have water, for the hill was steep, and the weather was unbearably hot. And we did have water, not only the water we took, but water fountains all along the way to drink from. While making this difficult trek, it brought to mind that there are also steep hills in this life that are hard to get up and over. These hills are often unforeseen circumstances that slow us down, run us into the ground, and even bury us at times. But like the water that helped Myrna and me on our climb, so it is with God who provides His own water of truth, encouragement, hope, and answered prayer. And should we let Him; the Lord will even walk with us to the top. Like Emily the guide who walked with Myrna and me to the top of Megiddo. We made it, and so will you, God and His water will make sure of that.
God comforts us not to make ourselves comfortable, but to teach us how to be comforters of others. Think of how you might be a comfort to someone this week. It will bless you beyond measure, but more so it will bless them.
Waiting in the sunshine of God’s love is what will ripen you for a blessing beyond compare. (K)
Be ye fishers of men. You catch ’em – He’ll clean ’em.
Ask for nothing in return
Giving grace, forgiveness, and mercy to another never asks for anything in return.
The tendency is to do the urgent and not the important. So, what do you think God wants you to do in the midst of all that is in front of you? Is it not the most important?
Faith is to believe what we cannot see, and the reward of faith is to see what we did believe. St. Augustine
When the world seems at its worst, Christians must be at their best. Are you?
The church is not a museum for good people, but a hospital for the broken. Grace
They who have received the most grace from God are able to bear most afflictions from Him. (Streams, 378)
The challenges before us are never as great as the God who stands behind us in everyone. (K)
God may delay or deny some of our different requests, but will ultimately never disappoint us as we put our trust and confidence in Him. (K)
To be clear, God loves everyone. However, He may prefer those who have the ‘fruits of the spirit,’ rather than those who are ‘religious nuts!’
Don’t give up
Never yield to gloomy anticipations, for who told you that the night would never end? It was not God, for He always brings forth the sun, just as He brought forth THE SON. (K)
Coming a part!
If you don’t part from your circumstances and rest in the Lord for a while, then you may come apart. Therefore put your burdens on Him, for He is really the only one strong enough to carry them in your life. [k]
Spiritual opportunities knock, but temptations bang on your front door.
I walked a mile with pleasure, she chattered all the way; but left me none the wiser for all she had to say.
I walked a mile with sorrow, and never a word said she; but, oh, the things I learned from here when sorrow walked with me.
The Bible is the only book whose author is present when it is read.
Too often we think we are trusting when we are merely controlling our panic. True faith gives not only a calm exterior but a quiet heart. (Streams III, March 31st)
God does not always change our circumstances, but better yet He will change us within to face them. (K)
“Let us turn our fears into faith, and quit worrying about the thing that has not and may never happen. Don’t let tomorrow use too much of today.” John B. Smith
Faith grown cold
Without fuel, a fire grows cold—and without the fuel of the Bible, prayer, and Christian fellowship, our faith grows cold. Graham
Pilgrim’s Progress is one of the greatest Christian booksellers of all time. It was written while its author, John Bunion, who was in a Bedford jail for 12 years in England. He was there because of his faith. But his time in jail did not dissuade him, nor did it squelch one of the great lessons in the Christian life, that being that from the trials we face in this life can come some of our greatest contributions.
Crown of life
What may come from the trials you are facing, nothing but good according to the Lord’s perspective? “Blessed is a man who perseveres under trial; for once he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” James 1:12
Walk with God
The man who walks with God always gets to His destination.
Nothing is so strong as gentleness, and nothing so gentle as strength.
Help my heart be broken to the things that God’s heart is broken about.
Love not only gives, but it also forgives.
